Keep positive Kelly! I'm sure her breath is a positive sign...God's way of letting you know things are going to be ok. We all pray so.

Thanks everyone,

I know this is going to sound strange, but Phoebe has always had nice smelling breath, and when it's not nice smelling is when she has had the ulcers on her tongue either already there or they show up soon after her breath starts to stink! My reason for posting this is that this morning when Phoebe gave me a few kisses on the cheek, her breath didn't stink! She still has the ulcers on her tongue--although they haven't got any worse--but I'm hoping this is a sign that maybe the chemo might be at work on them already, hence the better smelling breath! Trying to look at the positive!

Off to bed for a nap now--worked the graveyard shift last night--need sleep!

Thanks again.

Kelly, Glad to hear the good news! A positive attitude goes so far! God willing Phoebe will soon be in remission again! Keep up the fight. And remember "We are the cure!" You & Phoebe remain in my prayers!

Thanks again everyone,

We are home from the vet!

We are in battle mode again!

We WERE going to do maintenance doses (every 6 weeks) of her chemo to try and keep her in remission; but of course that has all changed now that the cancer is back!

The vet gave her a dose of chemo and tested her blood, liver, and kidney functions--all are "perfect" in the vets words, which is great news! She did say that in her opinion it has NOT become a case of Multiple Myleoma--which is what these cases often end up as--because she sees no evidence of that in her blood work! This is good news as well since her outlook would be VERY grim if it does ever end up in Multiple Myleoma!

The vet made a point to tell us that while yes, Phoebe's cancer is back and not the best news, she told us that the lumps she does see, and even the ulcers on her tongue are not the same hard consistency that her previous ones were and that maybe it is not as advanced or aggressive as it was before; hoping that it will be easier to get her back into remission with the same chemo drug--hoping that she will respond to it the same positive way! If she has built up a tolerance to the drug, there are other alcalating chemo drugs we can try--hopefully one of them will do the trick! She said that hopefully we will see evidence of the drug working in 10 days--either by the diminishment of existing lumps and ulcers, and or the non-appearance of any new lumps or ulcers--but that it could take a couple of doses to know for sure if the chemo is working again or not.

The vet also says that it's hard to determine how long Phoebe can be on chemo without causing Kidney and Liver problems, but that as long as everything remains perfect, and the chemo gets her back into remission, that as long as her system can handle it we keep going! The vet says that in her 2 years of practice--she is interning under a vet with 15 years of experience in canine cancer--she has never seen a case as strange as Phoebe's! Most Plasma cell tumors are singular in nature and are considered cured with the removal of it; but Phoebe's are dermis (skin) tumors and are in many places! So, it stands to reason that Phoebe's course of treatment is probably not going to be text-book either, so it's hard to get any kind of definite statistics as to how other similar cases have gone, i.e. permanent remission, length of chemo treatments, or predictions of life expectancy averages.

So, we battle and pray that we and her immune system can get her back into remission--AND STAY THERE!

We will talk to the vet by phone (unless something changes dramatically) in about a week--just to touch base--then we will see her again on the 8th of Sept. for another dose of chemo.

I haven't asked her the question that has been on my mind, but will most likely wait until we know for sure if she responds to this--or any--chemo; and that is what can we expect in life expectancy and quality of that life if we stop chemo and let the cancer run it's course? Of course we would only choose this option if the chemo started damaging her system worse than it was helping.

I am also filled with more hope and fighting attitude as well. This vet is just so great, she is there 100% for Phoebe and she actually sat and talked with me after Kurt took Phoebe outside for a walk after her treatment, she gave me a pep talk and told me that I had to take care of myself, try and get back to a positive place too, that I have to stay strong for Phoebe because she senses the fear and sadness in me and makes her scared and sad too! Of course, I knew all this, I just needed some reminding. I just immediately reverted back to January when we got this horrible diagnosis and the feeling that we were going to lose her immediately!

I will keep you updated on Phoebe's progress (staying positive)!
