Maui is beautiful. It is my understanding that when a dog has hair such as Maui does, it needs to stay out of their eyes because it can cause irritation to the eyes and cause infection and possible blindness. My vet gave me that information.

BAD daddy, Cute Maui. Maltese's are A LOT of work. My Tanner just got a shorter hair cut, his hair was really long (and well kept) it's just getting warm where we live and I though he might like a change (I didn't know if I was ready for it though). He looks cute, and they kept his face and ears long. Tanner is a GREAT dog, and I would love him even if he were hairless. Petra

When I had my Lahsa Apso, Taja, I did the same - kept her groomed short! In the winter months, she had a puppy cut, but in the summer - even shorter. Abby, being part Westie and part poodle is still kept shorter - no Westie skirt for her - Maui looks like a puppy with the shorter cut! - I like the "shorter style of life" in the end! You are truly blessed to have such a great relationship with Maui - and blessed as well that you're not looking out at 5 inches of SNOW!!!

Have a great day! I love this site! Thank you so much!

TO SONIA............I use Artificial Tears 1-3 times a day. If you notice a greenish mucius in the corner of the eye, it's usually an infection. Another solution is to have your Vet. prescribe a very mild antibiotic. You put it in their water bowl and the hair and stain will just grow out. Stain sill not come back unless you stop the antibiotics. I have not tried it because after talking to my Vet. he said he would give it to me but there is a chance that Your Maltese could develope an immunity to antibiotics. My choice is the drops. I also take a very soft damp cloth and holding it in my fingers just grasp the hair with the staining and rub my fingers back and forth. You can also put a VERY mild soap on the cloth and then rinse with clean water afterwards. Again this is an every day thing but it only takes a few minutes...... Jack...........Good Luck!!!!!!

my charlie is a maltese and maddi is a rescue puppy ~ not sure 'what' she is besides 'perfect'... charlie has looked like maui's before pics, but usually keeps the puppy clip with the short ears...that way we can pretend that he is young and will be with us forever...they are beautiful whether they are groomed or not :)

Our Lhasa Apso looks alot like Maui does before his grooming too! We have to get him in at least once a month. He matts up pretty bad at times, and of course living in Las Vegas, we have to have him "summer cut" when it gets really hot. So............keep the faith!

I have my four Yorkies that look kinda like her right now, I better get busy.....it takes awhile to groom all four of them and my two youngsters ( Moose and Buddy) don't like hairtrimmings.

Maui is a beautiful girl with or without long hair but us ladies know we always feel better with a new do. My minature schnauzers love to go to the groomer every five weeks. They think they are so pretty when they come home ( and they are). Susan is the only one that has ever groomed them and it is like a play date for them as she spoils them as much as we do. I hope Maui is feeling much better and You,Maui and family have a blessed Easter.

Hi James,

I too keep Rudy's hair in a puppy cut. Because of that some people do not recognise him as a
Maltese. I also brush him every morning, after brushing his teeth (he has periodontal problems
and has to have his teeth brushed with a secial tooth paste). He loves to be brushed and it only
takes about 5-6 minutes to accomplish. He comes to me every morning looking for his "getting
ready for the day" routine to be performed. I got him when he was 3 yrs old and he had bad
staining around his eyes and mouth. Over time it just went away on it's own. I have heard that
it is caused by some kind of organism growing around mouth and eyes. The first few years I had
him I used to bathe him at least every two weeks and sometimes once a week because he sleeps
with me. I don't know if this had anything to do with it disappearing or not. I also give him baby
vitamins and and extra b-complex. When he was 10 he developed a heart murmur and subsequent
CHF. He is on a brandnew medication, though, which is supposed to be a veritible wonder drug.
It was available in Europe first and just was okayed for use in the US. Over time it actually reduces
the size of the heart and tones the muscle. I think your Maui is lovely and I am sure she is a real
sweet dog.......all Maltese are very special.
