- Spirit 1.3 years old

- Spirit-my 5 month old golden retriever from a service dog training program, she will become my new service dog.
- About Me:
- I am still in pain over loosing my little Rusty, my medical alert service dog. I was an RN and worked on a pediatric floor at our local hospital. I became severely allergic to latex from the use of gloves. I now have an extremely life threatning allergy to latex, rubber, plants & trees and foods that are related to the rubber plant. I am 100% disabled because at anytime my throat can close in 30 seconds and I can not breathe. I go into shock on about a daily bases that requires Epinepherine. My last service dog could tell when my metabulism changed, like a low blood pressure, and alerted me. When I was asleep and had an attack my airway would close & I did not wake up on my own. My dog would then jump on me, digging into my chest, I would get my husband and take Epi. He had saved my life over and over again.
- What is one thing your dog does that reminds you to open your heart and love more deeply?
- Rusty was a shelter dog. We had a very close bond, when I got sick he started to take care of me. He apparently was watching what happened during these attacks and what I took to stop them. One day he grabbed an Epi-pen as I was starting an attack. He took on this job alone. We never seperate, he was licenced as a full working medical alert service dog with only two months training. My dog lives his life to protect me 24/7, he never leaves my side. He is my hero.
Now that he is gone, Spirit is helping wonderfully.

Rusty passed from Lung cancer last October. I was not well enough to share the news, just have not logged back on yet.
Rusty has passed. However my new service dog Spirit has taken on her role wonderfully. She is a fully trained medical alert service dog. Being a retriever she can "go get"my meds, pick things up, bring things to me, things Rusty had a hard time with. However he shined in other areas.

Rusty has passed
I just want to thank everyone for all the wonderful prayers! Rusty lived twice as long as the vets said he would, he lasted two more months. I had to make the decision of euthanizing him when he finally got too ill. The vet came to our house and he passed in my arms as I spoke to him. I have never felt such a huge loss before! I would not be alive today if he had not have been here, he was a real hero when it comes to service dogs!

I just want to say thanks
I just want to thank all of you and your prayers for my service dog Rusty. The vets said he had less than 60 days to live. He has gone over three months now. He is weak, but still wagging the tail showing no signs of pain, and not ready to go yet. So far I have had an extra month with him. Thank you so much for the wonderful comments and prayers.

- Kara, you are a true inspiration to all of us. Guess what? I have/had 2 little dwarf bunnies in my basement too! 2 weeks ago the female (a rescue) passed away after 7 years and of course broke our hearts. The male & she, (neutered & spayed of course), were truly "love bunnies". They were inseparable, and the little female, Phoebe, always groomed and kept her soul mate,"Henri" clean. Now his hair is a mess and my daughter is having to groom him herself. He is fairing well, and ironically one of my Shih Tzus has taken a strong liking to him. So she keeps him from getting too lonely. God truly blesses us with these precious creatures & their memory stays with us forever. I too, cannot imagine a world w/o pets. My 2 daughters are grown; 1 married, 1 about to marry. Then I will be alone w/ just my pets. My 2 bad marriages and recent bad relationships have me totally trusting my animals only. We've been blessed to have them. It is my dream to own my own place to provide more love to as many pets over the next few years I have; and work as long as I have to just to support and care for them. I wanted to retire last year, but now with 3 dogs and a rabbit; I must wait. But they are worth it. That is Buster in the photo; my newest male Shih Tzu. He's 14 wks. He has the sweetest disposition. My female, Izzy, the juvenile just over 1 yr. old is so smart we can't outsmart her! ......And my darling Foxxy the Pom, is my best dog since Jeepers. She spent her life with Jeepers so when he passed we grieved together. She would come to sleep at the foot of my bed for 6 weeks after Jeepers passed, instead of sleeping in her bed with Jeepers' bed in the diningroom. However heartbroken though, we must go on so we can have the opportunity to give a good life with love to as many pets as we can live to have. You will be in my prayers forever....Judy

- I'm sorry, Kara. We all have experienced this pain, I think. But to have a home grown service dog and loose him, has got to be the worst. My heart and prayers go out to you. May Spirit be just the dog to l"ift your Spirits" and show you the undying loyalty that Rusty had. I lost my Maltese, Jeepers, last year. He was my emotional service pet.
